Arena Football Cancels 2009 Season

The United States recession has made it’s first violent hit this week. The front office of the Arena Football League has announced that they will be canceling the entire 2009 season. They do however plan to be back in 2010.
“Every owner in the AFL is strongly committed to the League, the game, and, most importantly, the fans,” Acting Commissioner Ed Policy said. “Owners, however, recognize that, especially in light of the current unprecedented economic climate, the AFL, as a business enterprise, needs to be restructured if it is to continue to provide its unique brand of this affordable, fan-friendly sport.”
Reports have been circulating that the 22 year old league has been on hard times for a few years now. They had even been thinking about doing away with a couple of the 16 teams. ESPN who brodcasts AFL games has said they have no interest in a league with fewer than 16 teams.
